The 101 Forward Control was developed from lessons learned on the earlier Forward Control IIA and IIB Land Rovers which hadn't been particularly successful commercially. Named for its 101″ wheelbase, the 101 Forward Control had a custom designed chassis fitted with Salisbury axles front and back. Power was provided by the all-alloy Rover V8.

The development of the Forward Control 101 was primarily due to the British army requirement for a gun tractor to pull the then new 105mm Light Gun. The initial prototype was shown in 1968 with a preproduction run of vehicles in 1972.. The 101 appears to be the most capable stock Land Rover ever built. It is not much for creature comforts.

Land Rover fitted these 101s with the same all-aluminum, 120hp 3.5-liter V8 petrol engine and a slightly modified version of the four-speed gearbox as was equipped in the civilian Range Rover. This example currently runs a newer, yet still carbureted, 4.9-liter variant attached to an automatic transmission donated from a Discovery.
